Course Description

Level 1 English: This is a compulsory, foundation course for Year 11 students, essential both as an important stand-alone subject and to form the basis of your studies for all your subjects at this and subsequent levels 2 and 3.  While there are no specific entry requirements, it is important to understand your study and work will be done at Level 6 of the National Curriculum.  Therefore, your successful completion of Year 10 English at Level 5 is expected. 


Aims:  This course of study will focus on each student’s ability to demonstrate and develop ideas related to their learning of huatau (concepts) in each of the four achievement standards offered.  Students will be expected to express their ideas orally, visually, in their reading and writing and through various combinations of these approaches in each, prescribed kaupapa matua koiri (core activity). 


Course Content: 

The main focus of the course is to strengthen skills in: 

  • Practical ability in drawing, painting and making. 

  • Whakapapa, tuakiri auhurea and local curriculum 

Critical thinking, Idea development and sustainability.
