NCEA LEVEL 2
CODE: 12CLS
Classical Studies is the study of the people, places, and events of the classical world and how they influence the modern world. It is an interdisciplinary subject where students engage with literature, languages, art, history, science, technology, religion, and philosophy. In this subject, students explore community, cultural identity, values, and perspectives and think critically about human behaviour and relationships to appreciate the civilisations of ancient Greece and Rome, understand the past and the present, and to imagine possible futures.
This course covers concepts such as empire and power, conflict, citizenship and art. Topics include the politics of the late Roman Republic, the work of Homer and art and architecture in the ancient world. Internals involve the impact and consequences of the volcanic eruption that destroyed Pompeii and a comparison of the movie Troy with Homer’s Iliad.
