Year 10 Science
Although next year timetables are yet to be finalised, course selection is now finished. Any changes to student courses will now take place in January.
Course Description
Students will be participating in a wide variety of activities to develop skills, knowledge, and attitudes in Science from the New Zealand Curriculum. This course is the continuation of the year 9 Science programme. The two years are designed to cover levels four and five of the New Zealand Curriculum. The concepts in year ten include:
Term 1: Whakapapa: Genetics, reproduction and Earth Science
Term 2: Interactions: Climate Science, Forces and Motion
Term 3: Whanake: Atomic Science and Electricity
Term 4: Medical Science: Biological systems and life functions.
Assessment
Students will be assessed against the levels in the New Zealand Curriculum. There will be a variety of approaches to assessment in order to prepare the students for learning in the senior school. For example:
- Assignment at the end of the Whakapapa unit (Genetics and Earth Science)
- Three portfolio pieces in the Interactions unit of work. (Climate Science and Forces and Motion)
- Examination on the Whānake unit of work (Atomic Science and Electricity)
- Portfolio of work in the Medical Science unit.

Some courses may become unavailable due to the number of students taking the courses or changes in staffing.
New courses may also be introduced, in which case you will be notified and given the opportunity to select the new course.
