Course aims:  

Throughout this course you will build confidence as a performer by preparing, rehearsing, interpreting, and presenting performances of music individually and collaboratively using a range of performance skills and techniques. You will create structure, refine, and represent compositions using the elements of music to express imaginative thinking and personal understandings. Finally, you will study and analyze music in relation to historical, social, and cultural contexts. Develop skills in Computer recording and song production. Students will use technology currently applied in Music industry to write, record, and produce a series of their own Musical pieces.  

Students will: 

  • Learn to reflect on the expressive qualities of music and evaluate their own and others’ music both live and recorded.  
  • Learn to reflect on composition processes and presentation conventions.  
  • Consider the influence of music in their own music making and in their lives. 


Course Content: 

  • Students will perform music that incorporates elements of te ao Māori, including the use of taonga puoro, and/or te reo Māori, guided by appropriate tikanga. 
  • Critical thinking, Idea development and sustainability. 
  • Explore the musical histories of their whakapapa.  
  • Discuss diverse music contexts.
  • Understand how diverse contexts inform creative musical output.
  • Explore tikanga and reo features of Māori music.
  • Explore what ihi, wehi, and wana mean in a Māori music context.
  • Explore how music ideas can be communicated with intent.  
  • Use music concepts to create an intended effect.
  • Develop awareness of musical performance within contrasting contexts
  • participate in music-making.  
  • start to identify pathways in music. 
  • Gain experience in performing music for an audience.
  • Experience the process of creating original music.
  • Understand that every music context has its own structures. 

Where can this subject take you? 

Success in Level 1 Music will provide students with the basic knowledge and skills that will be useful for studying Level 2 Music, composition & song writing, Performance techniques and Music research.  Music is an approved NCEA subject and offers students a range of skills and understanding in not only Music but sound and lighting, Music technology and History.

Entry Requirements

Level 1 Music is a performance based course, although not necessary- ability to play an instrument confidently is encouraged. Students will be required to enroll in itinerant Music tuition at school as a Level 1 student.
