Level 1 General Science

Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Miss S. Auina.

Level 1 NCEA GENERAL Science gives students a strong start in science while embracing KBHS values like Whānau (family), Tohea (resilience), Kairangi (excellence), and Mana (respect). The course teaches how to think critically, analyze data, and do experiments, all while respecting indigenous ideas about the connection between people and nature.

Course Contents:

  • Exploring physical phenomena to do with forces and motion, using experimentation.
  • Relationships between micro-organisms and the environment
  • Observations and explanations of the Earth-Moon-Sun systems

For further information see: Ms S.Auina

Please note: If you wish to take more than one Science at Year 11, you are encouraged not to take this course, as there will be an overlap between this course and the other two Year 11 Sciences. If you only wish to take one Science, this is a great choice!

Entry Requirements

The Level 1 NCEA Science course is open to all students, regardless of their background or abilities. While having some previous science knowledge can be helpful, it's not necessary. The course focuses on building strong skills in scientific thinking, problem-solving, and inquiry, which will prepare students for higher levels of science.

This course is great for:

  • Curious Learners: Students who are naturally curious about the world and want to learn how things work.
  • Problem-Solvers: Those who like to ask questions, analyze information, and find logical solutions.
  • Hands-On Learners: Students who learn best through doing experiments and practical activities.
  • Future Scientists: Anyone considering a career in science, as this course sets the stage for advanced studies in Levels 2 and 3.
  • Culturally Engaged Students: Learners interested in how Māori values and indigenous perspectives connect with science.
  • Team Players: Students who enjoy working in groups on experiments and projects.
  • Communicators: Those who are good at expressing their ideas and findings in writing, speaking, or through visuals.
  • Ethically Minded Students: Learners interested in the ethical issues in science and its impact on society.
  • Diverse Interests: Students with a broad range of interests, as the course covers Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Earth Sciences, and Agricultural Science.
  • Open-Minded Thinkers: Students who are willing to explore new ideas and adapt to different ways of thinking about science.
