Course Overview:
The Year 12 Building & Construction course at NCEA Level 2 provides students with practical skills and theoretical knowledge in the field of building and construction. This course is designed for students interested in pursuing a career in the construction industry or furthering their studies in trades-related fields. Students will engage in hands-on projects, learning industry-standard techniques and gaining an understanding of construction processes, materials, and safety practices.
Key Learning Areas:
- Construction Processes: Students will explore the various stages of construction, from planning and design to execution. This includes understanding building codes, regulations, and best practices in the construction industry.
- Practical Skills: The course emphasizes the development of practical skills in carpentry, joinery, and other construction trades. Students will work on projects that involve measuring, cutting, assembling, and finishing materials.
- Health and Safety: A critical component of the course is understanding and applying health and safety protocols in a construction environment. Students will learn about hazard identification, risk management, and safe work practices.
- Tools and Equipment: Students will become proficient in the use of hand tools, power tools, and construction equipment. They will learn how to select the appropriate tools for specific tasks and maintain them in good working order.

Materials and Requirements:
- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as safety boots, gloves, and eye protection
- Basic toolkit (hammers, saws, measuring tape, etc.)
- Access to construction materials for projects
- Portfolio or project documentation folder
