Course Description

ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNING

YEAR 10

CODE:  10ELL

This course aims to: 

 

  • to introduce / develop basic skills in the four literacy areas, ie. Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening. 

  • To equip students with the necessary language skills to participate fully in class subjects. 

  • encourage language learning in a differentiated and positive environment  

  • to prepare students for NCEA ELL Level 1 

 

Learning Objectives:  Students should be able to: 

 

  • read for information 

  • extract information from text 

  • produce simple, informative writing 

  • fill in simplified forms using personal information 

  • write grammatically correct, simple sentences 

  • Listen for specific information 

  • Orally present a familiar topic 

 

Progress and testing:  

English Language Learning will prepare students for NCEA using a variety of interactive strategies, students will develop grammar and vocabulary and writing, improve reading and listening comprehension and be assisted in coping with the language demands of their other subjects.

Entry Requirements

Students are selected based on their Language Aquisition, how recently they have been in New Zealand and/or recommendations from other subject teachers.  All students are required to complete an ELL Assessment.


Pathway

Our Year 10 English Language Learners course provides students with a foundation of basic skills in preparation for Level 1 NCEA in English Language in the four learning areas of Listening, Speaking, Reading, Writing.

Course Selection is confirmed at the start of 2025.  You can change the courses you have selected up until the start of next year provided there are still spaces in the course you wish to change to.

Some courses may become unavailable due to the number of students taking the courses or changes in staffing.

New courses may also be introduced, in which case you will be notified and given the opportunity to select the new course.
