The purpose of a Service Academy is to:

  • Encourage students to stay engaged in learning by providing a motivating and disciplined programme.
  • Help students to gain improved qualifications and help them prepare to move successfully into the workforce or further education and training. 

This programme is part of the Government’s Youth Opportunities package, which aims to create new work, education and training opportunities for young people.

Target Student Group:

The target student group is year 13 students. Students participating in the Services Academy may already aspire to a career in the Defence Force or other uniform service. Others, including those who may be at risk of disengaging from education, will be seeking to reengage in education and develop their life and leadership skills

Subject Requirements:

2 option subjects from Service Academy and 3 other option subjects from the school Year 13 Course Guide.

Service Academy Courses will consist of:

  • Service Training, Induction Camp (compulsory), 
  • Bushcraft camp (compulsory) 
  • Basic and Advanced Leadership Courses (selected), 
  • Adventure Race (compulsory), 
  • Recruitment and Career Guidance, 
  • Fitness Development, 
  • Employment skills, 
  • Life Education, 
  • Social and Community Responsibility.

Other standards may be offered by outside Providers during the year.

Up to a total of 34 plus credits over the two option lines can be gained.

Entry Requirements

Entry Requirements:

  • Medically fit
  • Turning 17 prior to or within 3 months of Services Academy programme ending
  • A real desire to become a member of the New Zealand Defence Force
  • Must have passed Level 2 

Supplementary Materials/ Equipment

$260.00 will be required to be paid before the end of Term 1. This will go towards uniform, travel and all external courses provided throughout the year as the course is partially funded by Ministry of Education as part of the Government Youth Opportunities Package.
