The language is yours, the language is mine! Have no fear, don’t be shy, let the language fly 



This course is an introduction to te reo Māori (Māori language) and encompasses the study of general Tīkanga (protocols and customs). Students work to develop a foundation of basic Māori language speaking , reading, and writing skills. 

Our year 9 Te Reo Māori course focusses on: 

  • Pronounce te reo Māori accurately and confidently 
  • Learn basic Māori vocabulary and grammatical structures
  • Be able to express basic connections to the land, environment and people
  • Apply technical knowledge of foundation-level reo Māori
  • Develop respect for te reo Māori as you learn about yourself and others.
  • Learn our school haka
  • Karakia and waiata
  • Mihimihi
  • Learn about and participate in pōwhiri

There is an opportunity for students to gain NCEA Level 1 credits in this course.






Entry Requirements

This is an introduction, beginners course to te Reo Māori and basic tīkanga. There is no prerequisites to study this course. 

Pathway

Our Year 9 te reo Māori course  provides students with a foundation of basic communicative skills and cultural knowledge that will be useful for studying te reo in our Year 10 te reo Māori course.
