Year 9 Social Studies

Course Description

Kia orā, Welcome to Y9 social studies. In this course, students examine the causes and effects of social issues relating to identity, culture, societal structure, and organization and how people respond to change. The course analyses humanity actions from a local, national, and global context from a social inquiry process.

Social Studies is about how societies work and how people can participate and take action as critical, active, informed, and responsible citizens. Topics are drawn from the past, present, and future and from places within and beyond New Zealand.

Course Overview

Term 1
Term 1: we explore how cultures are built over time and the impact they have upon people's behaviors and perspectives.

Term 2
Term 2: students look at how power can be given, gained, or taken and how power impacts people’s rights.

Term 3
Term 3: Explores global changes through an environmental lens, exploring how people cause changes and what they can do to address these changes.

Term 4
Term 4: Consists of Housing impacts and Assessments.

Some courses may become unavailable due to the number of students taking the courses or changes in staffing.

New courses may also be introduced, in which case you will be notified and given the opportunity to select the new course.
