Science

In Aotearoa New Zealand, Science uses the nature of science strand from The New Zealand Curriculum to teach ākonga what science is, and how scientists work. Ākonga will develop their scientific literacy, and their understanding of mātauranga Māori as a body of knowledge that both supports and challenges scientific thinking.

A programme of learning might begin with a context that is relevant to the local area of the school or an idea that students are particularly interested in. This context or topic must relate to at least one Big Idea and may also link to other Big Ideas.

There are four Big Ideas in Science. These are: Science; Chemistry and Biology; Physics, Earth and Space Science; and Agricultural and Horticultural Science. These subjects are distinct but also interconnected. Ākonga who explore more than one of these subjects will find connecting themes in the Significant Learning and the Nature of Science

All Year 9 and Year 10 students study Science and all Year 11 students are highly recommended to study a course in the sciences.
